What to do in Maslenica: Explore the Velebit mountain

The Velebit mountain towers over Maslenica and dominates the background of almost every image of the town. The locals are very proud of the mountain as it offers a lot to those who can appreciate it.

Majstorska cesta (The Workers/Masters road)

Local road D547, the Workers/Masters road offers a lot to those who venture through it. Offering amazing views of nature, and an experience of how locals used to traverse the mountain, as the road was a very important trade connection. It is located about 40-50 minutes away by car from Maslenica.

Tulove Grede (Cliffs/Pillars of Tulo)

Tulove grede are a natural phenomenon that look very peculiar and have a range of folklore stories and myths surrounding them. It is a conglomerate of white limestone cliff and pillars. It’s said that it was a place where dragons are born and that the beams are home to the famous Velebit fairies. The last of the myths is that they are the home of the Dark Queen, who brought bad luck and misfortune to those who she ran into in the mountain pass. The mountain pass Kraljičina vrata (Queens gate) is named after the myth of the Dark Queen.

Hiking on Velebit

Hiking in high heat during the summer can be extremely risky and should be done while taking all necessary precautions. It can be an extremely draining but also very rewarding, because the views are incredible.
